Stadium Woods Typographic Posters by Sarah Gugercin

Sarah Gugercin found inspiration for an Advanced Typography project in the old-growth white oaks of Virginia Tech’s Stadium Woods. Her work is on display in the Words Matter Exhibition at Perspective Gallery in Blacksburg, VA April 10 – May 17, 2019.

Gugercin explained her process in a Behance post.

I chose the Stadium Woods located on Virginia Tech’s campus because it is close to my heart. It is a rare, old growth forest that has trees growing in it that were alive before the founding of Jamestown! Another interesting feature is that most old-growth forests are very isolated and require a lot of traveling (and hiking) to visit but this one is right on Virginia Tech’s campus and easily accessible to the everyone. There is no permanent preservation designation of the Woods in the Virginia Tech campus plan.

Design
The white oak tree is an important species in Stadium Woods and there are dozens that are 350 to 400 years old! I used the white oak leaf’s lobing to form the custom “Stadium Woods” lettering. For the exhibition, we were required to use 3 colors from a pre-selected palette, but I made another poster with Virginia Tech brand colors (below).
